In the 1900s, the U.S Coast Guard Beach Patrol was trained to use dogs and horses to guard the southeastern coast at the Mounted Beach Patrol and Dog Training Center in Hilton Head. Also, three lumber mills helped in logging nineteen thousand acres of the island in the early 1950s. At the time, the population of the entire Hilton Head Island was only three hundred people. Until 1956, the only way to get to the island was a state run ferry or private boats. Now, visitors can easily stay in luxury Hilton Head hotels and explore this South Carolinian island city.
It is fairly common for luxury Hilton Head hotels to feature valet parking, room service, a concierge and on-site restaurants and bars while others offer breakfast buffets or snack bars. Other fairly common amenities include luggage storage, safety deposit boxes, laundry and dry cleaning while a few offer babysitting services. The activity aspect of these hotels is often quite rich, including spas, massage, jacuzzis, fishing, on-site tennis courts, nearby golfing, swimming pools, fitness centers and barbecue facilities while a few also feature hiking or other activities. Business centers, meeting rooms and banquet facilities are also fairly common for those traveling on business.
